I know how many words that takes because the acknowledgments of my books are looooooong. There are so many people to thank, that I won’t be able to thank them all in the detail that they deserve. I was a little overwhelmed and don’t actually remember what I said except that I was a wee bit excited. Jeannette Epps, who is an actual lady astronaut, was the presenter for my category and handed me the award. Here’s the text of my speech, although there was some ad-libbing at the beginning because Dr. Thank you all for sharing this nomination with me and being wonderful, supportive people. Trail of Lightning, by Rebecca Roanhorse (Saga).Spinning Silver, by Naomi Novik (Del Rey / Macmillan).Record of a Spaceborn Few, by Becky Chambers (Hodder & Stoughton / Harper Voyager).I encourage you to pick up one of the other finalists for your next read. I was rooting for every one of them because the books were solid and the writers are delightful people. I was so fortunate to be nominated in a year when the finalists were all amazing. I had to sit down for a bit when I realized that. I have been told that this is only the 17th book to win the Nebula, Locus, and Hugo awards. On Sunday, my novel The Calculating Stars won the Hugo award for best novel.

It is a story that many of us think we know but don't, and Erik Larson tells it thrillingly, switching between hunter and hunted while painting a larger portrait of America at the height of the Progressive Era. As U-20 and the Lusitania made their way toward Liverpool, an array of forces both grand and achingly small - hubris, a chance fog, a closely guarded secret, and more-all converged to produce one of the great disasters of history. Meanwhile, an ultra-secret British intelligence unit tracked Schwieger's U-boat, but told no one. Germany, however, was determined to change the rules of the game, and Walther Schwieger, the captain of Unterseeboot-20, was happy to oblige. He knew, moreover, that his ship - the fastest then in service - could outrun any threat. But the Lusitania was one of the era's great transatlantic "Greyhounds" and her captain, William Thomas Turner, placed tremendous faith in the gentlemanly strictures of warfare that for a century had kept civilian ships safe from attack. Germany had declared the seas around Britain to be a war zone, and for months, its U-boats had brought terror to the North Atlantic. On May 1, 1915, a luxury ocean liner as richly appointed as an English country house sailed out of New York, bound for Liverpool, carrying a record number of children and infants. You could add that, couldn’t you?” “I might have some silver embroidery done about the wrists,” he said. All in all, it was a disarming quality for a creature who could murder me without rescheduling his tea. He was astonishingly vain even by fair folk standards, which is like saying a pond is unusually wet, or a bear surprisingly hairy. Oil paint needs days to dry between layers, and he had trouble understanding I couldn’t just swap his entire outfit for another he liked better. The trick with Gadfly was persuading him to wear the same clothes for every session. I had nearly perfected the color of Gadfly’s silk jacket. MY PARLOR smelled of linseed oil and spike lavender, and a dab of lead tin yellow glistened on my canvas. Graphix Chapters are ideal books for beginning and newly independent readers. Publisher: Henery Press (October 25, 2016) It's Christmas Eve in Santa Fe, but among the revelers on Canyon Road, a decidedly unholy scene is taking place. "About this title" may belong to another edition of this title.īook Description Soft cover. Given all that’s going on, the novel comes together surprisingly well-but then Christmas is the season for miracles. The tale unfolds within the contemporary story of an American espionage agent who outs himself to his vicious Russian bosses by running off on Christmas Eve with a package they’ve been hired to steal-the baby son of a modern-day peacemaker. The agent’s initially unwilling helpers are a woman (who has been terrorized by an abusive husband) and her young son, Paul. The breakneck pace allows little time for characterization, and the blood-and-guts level is high as Russian agents close in (even young Paul gets into the act), but along the way there’s plenty of play with names and situations drawn from Bible stories. Morrell (Creepers, 2005) offers yet another change of pace in this compact, fast-paced combination of Rambo adventure (what he’s known for) and plea for peace on earth. To get there, however, he’s had to pull off a rather stunning maneuver-turning the circumstances surrounding Jesus’ birth into a spy thriller (with the magi as the spies).
